Why did you join BODZii?
I joined BODZii as part of the Summer Sweat program in May. I wanted to may SS more than just a 6 week program, I wanted it to be the start of a complete lifestyle change. In the past, I've suffered a lot from starting strong but burning out after 2 weeks or so because I either try to do too much at once, get bored, or just don't know how to measure my progress so I quit out of frustration. When the BODZii option was discussed with me, I immediately saw how having a coach would help. Someone else holding me accountable, while guiding me towards my goals, was exactly what I needed to get me off on the right foot.
How has BODZii helped you achieve your goals?
My original goal was incredibly vague: 'be healthier... and stronger I guess. Maybe lose some weight as a side effect'. I didn't really know what I meant by 'healthier', other than what I was doing wasn't working. BODZii has helped me achieve this by giving me smaller, specific goals to work on each week. I constantly am feeling happy with these smaller victories, which all join into my original broad goal. My goals have changed since starting, and BODZii is dynamic in matching my changing goals and giving me new milestones to work towards. It's been incredibly useful having someone more knowledgeable than me break up my large goals into more manageable chunks, as I would not know where to start.
How has working with a coach been beneficial for you?
Working with BODZii has been beneficial in so many ways. BODZii's helped me break down my goals into manageable pieces that I can work towards one step at a time. On weeks where I feel lethargic or stagnant, BODZii reminds me that this is a normal experience that everyone goes through... it's not just me. BODZii helps me stay grounded in my current victories, as I often spend so much time looking at where I want to be that I forget to celebrate how far I've come... BODZii definitely helps a lot with that perspective. When there's a million and one things that are telling me what I should or shouldn't be eating, BODZii aligns my nutrition goals with me as a unique individual. BODZii has also directed me to some amazing recipe websites that are not only healthy, but super delicious!
What are some challenges that your coach helped you work through?
Probably the biggest challenge that my coach has helped me with was keeping everything in perspective. I had a bad week a few weeks after I started. My eating went back to how it was before everything started, my sleep was all over the place, I felt tired the whole week and I felt like I could have done better at my SS workouts. My coach reassured me that this was a normal experience, and that no one has great weeks all the time. Once again when I finished SS, I felt that I had made light-year strides with how much I had improved from when I started 6 weeks prior. But the scale only showed a very small number change. My coach pointed out how I improved by 45s on the 30cal row, and did 1(+3) entire extra rounds of our test WOD circuit... the day after I spent at a weekend dragon boat regatta where I raced in 5 races over 2 days. She also pointed out that 2 may be a small number, but that 2% body fat down in 6 weeks is incredible so it helped me get that perspective. Regaining that perspective helped keep me motivated to keep going forward, rather than giving up for what I saw as a lack of results.
What are some “non-scale” wins you’ve experienced with BODZii?
My entire relationship with food has changed since starting BODZii. After trying some of the recipes that my coach directed me to, I began to realize that healthy food could taste good too. As someone who loves great tasting food, this was incredibly important for me to be able to achieve a healthy eating lifestyle. I drink water now, where before I'd go an entire day without drinking anything. I feel more fuelled for my workouts then when I tried in the past, and I can feel good knowing that I'm recovering from them properly. Perhaps my biggest win is now when I'm at the grocery store, my first desire to seek out healthy food. I no longer crave chips, chocolate, or other unhealthy foods for snacks, which I would have never believed before I started with BODZii!
What do you believe makes BODZii different from other forms of nutrition coaching?
I've never tried other nutrition coaching, so I can't do a direct comparison. But as far as I know nutrition coaching is often kept separate from working out. I think it's amazing that the BODZii coaches are also our coaches at CrossFit 416. They're great at working with athletes! When they are calculating what my nutrition goals should be, they know exactly what I mean when I say 'I do CrossFit 3x/week' and can factor that in to my goals. They know me that much better than a nutrition coach that doesn't have that insight.
What would you say to others considering getting help with their nutrition?
