We all are witnessing one of the remarkable moments of the twenty-first century that will have a place in the history: the Corona Virus (COVID-19). People's life and health has to be a priority for everyone all the time. However, these days, health and well-being has become even more important. Young and old, every individual is trying to boost their immune system by swallowing vitamin C and zinc pills, blindly buying any herbal supplement that probably will not protect acutely from COVID-19. Most of the people have already stocked excessive amounts of non-perishable foods, hand sanitizers, disinfectant wipes, hygiene products, toilet papers etc. Do we really need this? Buying and acting without thinking about anyone but ourselves? This is the absolute sign of panic.
First of all, we need to calm down. We have to be able to manage our anxiety to help ourselves and our loved ones. Here are some tips to cope with anxiety and stress;
1- Be Kind to Yourself: Remind yourself that you are strong and able to get through these hard times. Talk yourself in a positive manner. Our attitude for ourselves has an impact on our level of anxiety and coping mechanism.
2- Take a walk or Meditate: Get away from your phone. Cell phones and media can create anxiety. When we feel worried (any case of disease, injury etc.) we go on social media to find an answer that might relieve us but we are not finding it. We have to train ourselves to manage stress and anxiety rather than looking for a one time solution. Give yourself 10 minutes a day, find a time for a walk or meditate and clear your mind. Use this time to grow away from any shape of negativity.
3- Focus on breathing: Breathing is everything. It is a vital part of us that keeps us alive. Take control of your breathing. Breath in into your diaphragm/belly slowly and breath out through your mouth.
4- Work on finding positivity: There is always something to be thankful in every aspect of life, even in those days. Be conscious of how precious you are and your health is. Use those days to turn into yourself and reflect your past behaviours. Assess what you could do better for yourself and start doing it today.
Also, don’t forget to follow the advices from World Health Organization COVID-19;
1- Wash your hands frequently.
2- Maintain distance (at least 1 metre) from people who are sneezing or coughing.
3- Do not touch your eyes, nose, mouth or any part of your face. Avoid wearing a mask unless you’re unwell.
4- Maintain respiratory hygiene by covering your mouth and nose with your elbow or tissue (destroy it immediately) while sneezing and coughing.
5- If you feel sick (fever, cough, difficulty breathing) stay at home and seek medical care soon.
6- Most importantly, listen and read reliable sources to be up to date and informed.
Take care and be safe!
